FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm already required to earn service hours for my organization every semester and we support charities, how is this different?

Communities need volunteers to do activities like helping run events, raise money, or office work. It is a great way to meet people, expand your network, and help shine a positive light on your organization. Although it's good to donate man hours to that type of community service, it's typically not targeted or deep enough to generate the concrete soft skills experience you need on your resume or the stories you need to impress potential employers. However, the volunteer work you do on ServeFully projects is most likely to count as the service hour requirement for your organization. Ask your leader and find out. We can link members of your organization together and have them catologue their projects so we can generate statistics on your collective impact that can be used to promote your organization. We can also arrange for motivational coaching to keep students involved.

Is this geared only to college students?

No, he average student we work with is pursuing a non-professional college degree and is anxious about finding a job when they graduate and repaying their student loans, however, any student can benefit from adding concrete examples of leadership and other soft skills experience to their resumes. Students pursuing online credentials need projects that showcase their competency and help grow their network. High school students looking to earn scholarships or gain admission into competitive colleges and programs also need them. In fact, this program was modeled in part on a high school honors program that culminates in an indepth senior passion project.

Should I wait to enroll when I am closer to graduation or know what field I plan to enter?

No, the sooner you start, the bigger your advantage. Students earning credentials and college seniors approaching graduation with no internship and limited work experience certainly have something to gain. However, a freshman who starts off consistently adding a little volunteer work every semester and eventually starts tying it to course assignments will gain the most.

What is a personal brand and why do I need to build one?

A personal brand is the intentional, authentic, and consistent image you project—comprising your values, skills, and reputation—that shapes how others perceive you professionally and personally. Students must build one to stand out in a competitive job market, build credibility early, and attract opportunities like internships or projects that align with their career goals.

Why do I need this when I can just use AI tools like Big Resume and Big Interview?

Employers are able to filter out the students who rely heavily on AI for their career-readiness. When everyone has access to the same tools, the difference exists in what AI cannot replicate: a personal narrative built from real reflection and real experiences. AI is not replacing career services; it's changing their function and making them more important. Helping students gain real-world experience is becoming a critical function because students need stories to be able to give AI the prompts it needs to produce a polished resume and help them practice for interviews in a way that ensures what you submitted and how you answer are well aligned and authentic.

Does my volunteer work have to be related to increasing student engagement and success?

No, it's the perfect place for college freshman and sophomores to start out because they can leverage their personal experience and connections to serve schools, teachers, and students they already share a strong connection with. Many still have younger siblings and friends still in high school. These type of mentoring projects are easy to get started and are highly rewarding. They help you establish a consistent volunteer work routine right out of the gate.  Juniors and seniors who stay involved become efficient and effective enough to design projects or even internships related to their field of study or passions. Plus, student success is a very broad topic and the one thing students know is what they wish was different or better. One of our high schoolers studied how lack of feminine hygene products in the girls bathroom impacts attendance and succeeded in getting them installed. Another one aspiring to gain scholarships and go onto major in communications developed a project documentation and handoff system and established Instagram and LinkedIn accounts to help improve her honors program.
